If you’re not yet on Pinterest, the only question is why not? For those who haven’t heard of it, Pinterest is a social media network where you can share and save images that link to blogs, product pages, and other websites.
It’s a place for you to find ideas and inspiration for everything from crafts and home decor to artwork and recipes. Think of it as an online pinboard where you can save individual “pins” or images on your own boards.
How to Use Pinterest to Collect Home Decor Ideas?
You might think that Pinterest is not necessary, because you can simply download pictures or take photos with your camera. However, it is more difficult to structure them, and the memory is not infinite. But here too there is a life hack, use an app to clear memory.
There is a phone app that searches for duplicates and similar pictures, and then deletes them. The same app can create a protected memory section, where it is convenient to store valuable files.
One does not interfere with the other, use Pinterest to search for ideas on the network and the camera to capture the things you like from the real world.
Step 1: Sign Up for Pinterest
Visit Pinterest, fill out the necessary information, and click “Sign Up.” Whether you use your email address or an existing Facebook account, it’s that simple.
Step 2: Create a Project Board
Start by creating a board (or multiple boards) for your remodeling project. This board will be your go-to place for managing ideas and inspiration.
You can gather images and stories from various websites, like Acme Brick, which offers extensive content on construction, home design trends, and outdoor entertainment spaces. Their product brochures and catalogs are perfect for adding to your Pinterest board.
Step 3: Search for Project Ideas
Dive into Pinterest and search for ideas specific to your project. Whether you need “tile flooring for the kitchen” or “antibacterial tile for the bathroom,” you’ll find plenty of inspiration pinned by others. The platform allows you to be as general or specific as you wish.
Step 4: Pin from Other Design Sites
Many home design and remodeling websites are Pinterest-friendly. A simple Google search for room-specific or project-specific topics will lead you to thousands of websites. If the site supports Pinterest, pinning the image to your board is just one click away.
Step 5: Get Inspired by Others
If you find a pin you like, click on it to see more information, including the name of the person or company who created it. By clicking their name, you can view all their pins. If their ideas align with your dream remodel, follow their boards for even more inspiration.
Step 6: Share Your Board
One of the best features of Pinterest is the ability to share your boards. Share your board with friends who have great insights or with professionals like architects, designers, or contractors. This visual platform enables you to show rather than just tell those involved in your project what you envision.
Tips For Collecting Home Decor Ideas On Pinterest
Each year, Pinterest releases its “Pinterest Predicts” report, highlighting the trends they anticipate based on user searches and behavior. With an impressive 80% success rate over the past four years, this report provides invaluable insights.
By leveraging Pinterest’s data, you can effectively determine if the platform aligns with your target audience’s interests.
Create a Dedicated Board
The first step to using Pinterest to decorate is to create a board for your current project. You can name it whatever you like, based on the project you’re working on. Start your pinboard and add everything you like to it. It doesn’t necessarily have to fit the exact project you’re working on.
Anything can be inspiration—colors, shapes, or even travel destinations.Really, anything that helps you visualize what you want your project to look like.Of course, you can add more boards too, for future projects, recipes, or just for fun .
For example, when we were considering a new front door, I started pinning front doors on Pinterest. I created an inspiration board full of doors I loved for our house. One day, while shopping at the hardware store, we came across a door on clearance. We didn’t have to spend any time deciding if it was perfect because we already knew.
Refine Your Board
To streamline your project, you can delete pins from your current board or start a new one. Consider creating a new board with your final (or nearly final) decisions. This way, you can keep the original inspiration for potential future projects.
For our two ongoing remodels, we rely heavily on Pinterest for decorating and designing. Our idea boards are continuously filling up and evolving, but having them has made design decisions easier as we progress through each project. There’s an abundance of inspiration out there, and Pinterest is perfect for organizing it all.
Once you start saving pins you like, you’ll begin to see a clear path forward. You’ll notice the colors and shapes that consistently draw your attention. When you reach the editing phase, you might be surprised to find common themes among your ideas. Viewing them together is when your style and vision truly start to come together.
Create a Board for Each Room
I’m going to share a little secret with you. Every single room in our cabin (and our old bungalow!) has a hidden pinboard dedicated to its design. Whenever I discuss my post outlining the entire interior design process, this is always the first step.
Final Thoughts
Once you’ve put together a look, it’s time to shop! Are you feeling inspired? Great, but don’t copy exactly. What works in someone else’s space might not work in yours. Just because you pinned an image of a specific room or decor element doesn’t mean you have to recreate it exactly in your space.
After creating your mood board, there’s no rush to get everything done (unless you’re on a tight deadline). Hang the images up in your home and give yourself time to think about them. Sometimes, sitting with your ideas for a while can lead to better plans!
